Excess of nutrients feeding the mitochondria, such as glucose or fatty acids, leads to a increase in citrate output, increasing the pool of Acetyl-CoA in the cytosol/nucleus. Similarly, acetate treatment renders a similar output. Whatever the case, this pool of Acetyl-CoA induces global protein acetylation, including histone acetylation, and then, altered gene expression and protein function.
